43’ World Cruiser Monohull
Preliminary Design
This 43-foot short handed world cruiser is a preliminary design for Geoff Gardner, a sailor with practical, if somewhat unusual tastes. Here is some of his wish list.
• Sea kindly hull form
Geoff wanted a boat with a gentle motion either sailing to weather or riding out a storm. This is met with a rather narrower beam, a gentle flare to the topsides, and moderate displacement.
• Fast in light and medium wind, on all points, in waves
Heck, I love sailing. He didn't even need to specify this one.
• WIDLIO
Geoff put forward the principal: "When In Doubt, Leave It Out". "I want to go sailing, not fix stuff". A man after my own heart. Keep it simple. (Though I did question the lack of shower and sink in the head. Don't tell Geoff. We can put one in for you.)
• Lifting keel
Deep draft for good stability and speed at under sail, with a lifting keel to allow access to shallow lagoons. (Somewhat a digression from the WIDLIO principle; but cruising is all about exploration.)
• Tiller steering
Why not? The helm is light.
• Hard dodger protection for at least two people
If you've tried a hard dodger, you know this is a great requirement.
• Bulwarks, not toerails
Not my style normally; but practical for cruising.
• Easy access to the cockpit for swimming kids, dogs, and old people
Open transoms are an important safety feature too.
