Restoration of 1929 Paine and Skene Staysail Schooner Viveka

Viveka sailing post-restoration in Fall 2020

Viveka is a stunning 75’ 1929 Staysail Schooner designed by Frank C. Paine of Paine, Belknap and Skene. Viveka has a storied history. She has completed a circumnavigation, she was requisitioned as a spotter patrol boat during World War 2, and has of course spent time racing on San Francisco Bay. She has been named Joan II, Seaweed, Switftsure, Maunaloa, and finally Viveka. After a lifetime of adventures, she finally went for a restoration at Jeff Rutherford's in 2015.

Jim Antrim completed structural review for the complete hull and deck restoration plans, as well as designing new masts, mast fittings, chain plates, and rigging. He also completed plans for interior and deck layout.

Restorations like these are a wonderful opportunity for the community of craftsmen, artisans, and other marine professionals to work together on something really special. Viveka has now left San Francisco Bay and will be shipped to Spain where her new owners can enjoy her for generations to come.

The multi-year project was completed at Rutherford's Boatshop in Richmond, California.
